Belgium:
Demonstration against Vlaams Blok in Gent
1. Absatz
Today we demonstrated with 1200-1500 students in Gent against the appointment of Vlaams Blok MP Roeland Raes in the executive council of the university of Gent. The studentdemo received support from the unions of university-workers.
The demo was organised by a broad coalition of organisations in which we played a key-role. We work with a petition and collected already 1200 signatures (out of a total of 20000 students). From these the ALS (our student front organisation) collected 700. We distributed about 1500 leaflets to mobilise for the demo today and at the demo we were the strongest political organisation. The intervention of political organisations was very low at the demo. We were the only ones to have a delegation of our studentorganisation and to distribute a leaflet explaining how to continue the fight.
With the actions we demand that Roeland Raes would be removed from the council. With the ALS we also demand that students and the workforce at the university could decide on who governs us. We also raised the need to fight the Vlaams Blok in Gent, instead of limiting us to the studentmovement alone.
We now propose to organise a public debate within the two next weeks on how to continue the campaign, a debate in which we would propose to collect at least 5000 signatures by december and an action at the next meeting of the executive council of the university in december to try to physically stop the meeting taking place.
